As we stepped into Gypsy Moon Apothecary, the scents of herbs and incense immediately blanketed us, providing a much-needed sense of comfort after our harrowing experience in the corn maze. The shop’s mystical atmosphere, with its shelves lined with jars of exotic ingredients and ancient tomes, felt like a sanctuary from the dark forces we had just encountered.

Angelica and Bram followed me to a cozy seating area in the corner, where we settled in to discuss our unsettling findings. I pulled out Tara’s jade pendant, holding it up for the others to see.

“This can’t be a coincidence,” I said, my voice low and serious. “Someone placed this here deliberately, along with those herbs. It’s like they were staging some kind of ritual.”

Angelica nodded, her brow furrowed in thought. “But who would do something like that? And why?”

Before we could speculate further, Ezra Hawthorne, who managed the botanica, emerged from the back room, his eyes widening in surprise when he saw us. A warm smile spread across his face as he approached, his gaze lingering on me for a moment longer than necessary.

“Sage, what a pleasant surprise,” he said, his deep voice sending a slight shiver down my spine. “And Angelica and Bram, too. What brings you all here so late?”

I hesitated, not wanting to reveal too much about our investigation. “We were just... discussing some strange occurrences in town,” I said carefully. “Thought maybe you might have some insight.”

Ezra’s smile faltered slightly, and he glanced around the shop as if checking for eavesdroppers. “Strange occurrences, you say? Like what?”

I exchanged a look with Angelica and Bram, silently debating how much to share. Bram cleared his throat, drawing Ezra’s attention.

“We found some unusual items at the site of Tara’s murder,” he said, his tone serious. “Herbs and a pendant that seemed to be placed there intentionally. We were hoping you might know something about their significance.”

Ezra’s eyes widened, and he leaned in closer, his expression grave. “Show me,” he said, his voice a horse whisper.

I handed him the pendant and the bundle of herbs, watching as he examined them carefully. His brow furrowed, and he muttered something under his breath that I couldn’t quite catch.

“These are definitely herbs commonly used in dark rituals and spells,” he confirmed, his voice low and serious. “Mandrake root and belladonna, in particular, are often associated with summoning and binding rituals.”

My heart sank at his words, a cold dread settling in the pit of my stomach. I exchanged a worried glance with Angelica, who looked just as unsettled by this revelation.

“So, what does that mean?” Bram asked, leaning forward in his seat. “Why would someone use these herbs at the crime scene?”

Ezra sighed, running a hand through his tousled hair. “It suggests that there may be a deeper, more sinister motive behind Tara’s murder,” he said, his voice heavy with concern. “The presence of these herbs, along with the pendant, points to a ritualistic element to the crime.”

“But who would do something like that?” Angelica asked, her voice trembling slightly.
